Club Notes: 15 October 2015

 Time Trials

Our first time trials tools place last Sunday morning in Coral Leisure. Although it is very early in the season and swimmers are not back to their full training schedule the coaches noted that all tried very hard and good times were returned.

Parents and swimmers may ask what is the purpose of Time Trials at this early stage?  There are several reasons for introducing them. They get the swimmers used to racing again after the long summer break. They give the swimmer the opportunity to race in the early morning which is what’s needed to make finals at a Gala in the afternoon. They help parents, coached and swimmers to monitor progress and assess if the correct work is being put into training. They allow the swimmer to put into practice what they have learned in training in the race setting.

Areas for improvement generally noted by the coaches were in starts (particularly Backcrawl starts), turn speed and accuracy and timing, underwater kicking and areas around breath management, arm timing and rotation of body during the stroke.

Nevertheless a very good exercise and response.

Congratulations to Kevin Curran Monaghan Tennis Club and Sliabh Beagh Parent who received his Level 1 Tennis Coaching certificate from Peter Farrell Director of Tennis Leinster and TCI at the Tennis Coach Ireland Conference on Sun Sept 27 in DCU, Dublin. Well done Kevin.

Development Squad: There are still a few places on the Development squad: 8 -9 am Saturday mornings.  This is suitable for swimmers who are just starting to get a grip of the different strokes, it is a non competitive but fun session. Places are still left in the beginner and improver categories. For information contact Club Secretary Claire Sheridan Tel. No. 087 2909777 or Ita 086 8706733.

Senior Aqua Squad: This squad is comprised of swimmers aged between 7 and 11+. To be a member all swimmers need to be reasonably competent in the 4 strokes. Training is 3 times a week. Tuesday – 6 pm, Thursday 5.30 – 7 pm and Sunday 8.30 – 10 am. If interested  getting some good quality coaching, being part of a team and swimming fast over 25m, then you should contact our club Secretary Claire at 087 2909777 or Linda 087 1372923.
