LEINSTER GRADED GALA – A COACHES PERSPECTIVE
Sliabh Beagh swimmers attended this gala in big numbers on Sunday the 26/10/14. For many it was their first taste of open competition. The Graded gala is designed for new entrants into the competition world and also for experienced swimmers to try new events and distances.
The day was a success generally but particularly from a coaching and competition perspective. Ita, Dana and Linda were present to support the swimmers in their new challenges, guide them through the assembly, race preparation and then give them feedback post their race.
At this gala we also were rolling out a gala manager position and in this case Beth took the lead and mentored Joe into the tasks.
The coaches found the swimmers excelled and were good at receiving feedback. This is an important process as swimmers generally like to know what their swim looked like (they know themselves what it felt like) and really appreciate feedback on their performance, and where improvement can be made and on how that improvement can be achieved.
The competition element really focused the mind and even at galas of this standard, the swimmers learn a lot from their peers, their experience and the support they get from one another and from coaches and family.
Generally it must be stated that as this was the first major gala for most of our swimmers, the swimmers showed tremendous application, really tried to apply what they have been practicing and brought big smiles to themselves, their families and their club.
Well done to all. Hard work and dedication really do pay off
