Last Thursday 6th April 240 students from across Co Monaghan converged on the Coral leisure centre in Monaghan to take part in the Co Monaghan Second Level schools triathlon. This is the third year of this event and its popularity has gone from strength to strength. The race involved ten lengths of Monaghan swimming pool, followed by a 10K cycle and a 2.5K run. Speed in transition between the swim, cycle and run is crucial as every second counts when the athlete is against the clock! This year 35 individual athletes and 70 relay teams participated. For the majority this was the first time to experience such an event and hopefully the seed had been sewn to take part in similar events in the future.
Sliabh Beagh were proud and delighted to have 14 of their swimmers take part in the Individual event and five take part in the swim leg for their school relay team.
The individual athletes were as follows.
- Junior section: Allison Gorman, Katie Bowden, Hazel mc Morrow, Faolan Campbell, Cillian Mc Gahon, Danny madden, Matthew Skeath, James Campbell, Lúí Shiels and Ruachan Curren.
- Senior section: Emily Madden, Eimear Mc kenna, Colin Gorman, Leon Campbell.
- Team Participants: Emer Sheridan, Claragh Mc Gahon, Emma Mc Elvaney, Cliona Sheridan.
Sliabh Beagh swimmers once again dominated the podium with their swimmers showing that they also have talent outside the pool. Their aerobic capacity and endurance came into play as they took ten of the twelve top places.
Congratulations and well done to everyone who took part. A big thank you to the organising committee and to the members of Muckno Tri Club for a well organised and run event.
